What is a chaperone?

The course begins by explaining the role of a chaperone and why chaperones are used within healthcare settings. You will learn about the expectations of the role and the standards required when supporting patients during examinations.

Intimate examinations

You will explore what constitutes an intimate examination and the considerations healthcare professionals and chaperones must consider to protect patient dignity, privacy, and comfort.

Key requirements and responsibilities

The course covers the core responsibilities of a chaperone, including:

  • Maintaining professional boundaries
  • Supporting patient dignity
  • Accurate record keeping
  • Understanding local procedures and policies
  • Recognising and escalating concerns appropriately
  • Consent and confidentiality

You will learn how consent applies throughout an examination, including understanding when consent has been given and recognising situations where consent may be withdrawn.
