The project management life cycle

The course introduces the purpose of project management and the structured stages a project moves through from initiation to closure. It considers how planning, delivery, monitoring and review work together to help a project achieve its objectives within agreed timescales and resources.

Initiating and defining a project

You will explore how a project initiation document can establish a clear foundation for a project by setting out its purpose, scope, deliverables, stakeholders, resources and potential risks. The course also introduces SMART objectives and explains how clear, measurable and realistic goals can improve project planning and evaluation.

Stakeholder identification and engagement

Projects can affect many different individuals, groups and organisations. The course explains how to identify key stakeholders, assess their level of interest and influence, and plan appropriate communication throughout the project. It also introduces stakeholder analysis tools to help you carry out the right level of engagement with stakeholders.

Project planning, milestones and delivery

You will consider how milestones, deadlines and dependencies can be used to structure a project and monitor progress. The course introduces Gantt charts as a visual way of presenting project activities and timescales. During the execution stage, you will explore how highlight reports can provide stakeholders with clear updates on progress, achievements, risks, resources and upcoming priorities.

Monitoring, evaluation and project closure

The course explains the importance of comparing actual progress with the original project plan and taking corrective action when necessary. It also covers the main considerations involved in closing a project, including confirming that deliverables have been completed, evaluating outcomes, obtaining stakeholder approval, handing over completed work and documenting lessons learned for future projects.

Assessment and certification

At the end of the course, you will complete an assessment to demonstrate your understanding of the topics covered. You will need to achieve a result of 80% or higher to pass. On successful completion, you will receive a certificate that can be downloaded or printed for your records.
