Welcome to the GP Healthcare Alliance’s ‘Hypertension, Blood Pressure Management in Adults within Primary Care‘ course.

Estimated Completion Time: 3 Hours

This course is designed for clinical staff members who will be working within General Practice, in the UK. This should take up to 3 hours to complete, based on your prior knowledge and experience and is a course for Primary Care clinicians. The aim of this training is for the learner to be able to understand how to take and record a blood pressure reading, how hypertension can develop, be able to risk assess and manage a patient’s primary medication within General Practice. You will always adhere to your workplace protocols and policies; gain an understanding of what you will need to do and why, maintaining professional practices throughout. All guidelines provided in the lessons within this course are correct and current at the time of writing. You will need to ensure that you follow any updated guidelines and work protocols within your practice and area.

It would be beneficial to have a note pad at the ready, but please do not worry if you have not, there are downloadable files for your reference! Some of the  examples provided have not got audio support as they will be included in the PDF at the end of each lesson, which can be increased in size within this format, if needed for eye comfort. 

Please be aware that during this course the ‘National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’ (NICE) is referred to regularly as NICE.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding about how hypertension can occur and be able to provide advice regarding healthy choices/lifestyles.

  • Having an awareness of symptoms that might indicate Hypertension and being able to take a Blood Pressure reading.

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of what the blood pressure readings can mean.

  • Understand what can impact the blood make-up and potentially cause hypertension.  

  • Learn about antihypertensive drug treatments.

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of how to monitor drug treatment in hypertensive patients in Primary care.

  • To take away and explore additional information that you may wish to investigate online, these are correct and current at the time of writing this course and the initial web-links are included within the downloadable content.

Each Lesson title displays the average time that it could take, to complete this course at introductory level.

There is an end of course Assessment.

This is where you will be able to show off all the information that you have learnt, there is quite a lot, so making notes or having the downloaded version available might benefit you for a quick recap! You will need a pass rate of 80% or more to pass and be able to obtain your certificate, which can be downloaded and/or printed.
