Welcome to the GP Healthcare Alliance’s Diabetic Foot Checks in General Practice training course.
This course is designed for clinicians within general practice who carry out Diabetic foot checks, therefore this may take the full 2 hours or depending on prior knowledge and experience may be completed faster. The aim of this training is for the learner to be able to provide Diabetic foot checks in general practice, to their patients, being able to confidently deal with and record their findings, knowing what to do and who to refer too, when required. When recording patient details, we will be referring to those who work on the SystmOne platform within the NHS (which is NOT detrimental to the course content but you would need guidance in your own workplace recording systems), who will be providing face-to-face care as part of their role. Some lessons may be longer than others to ensure that you will be able to learn through the visual representation alongside the medical names and details of the conditions explored through various activities.
Please note that information provided by the GPHA Training Academy is not sufficient to ensure competences in the skill requirements. Assessment of competences should take place in line with local practice and in according to the RCNi guidelines, or any other that may have superseded these at the time of taking the course. Practice should always align with local protocols and procedures, the latest guidelines and any regulatory codes, understanding what to do with any concerns or queries as well as maintaining confidentiality throughout. This course provides you with guidance and will explain processes throughout.
It would be beneficial to have a note pad at the ready, but please do not worry if you have not, there are downloadable files for your reference! Some information provided has not got audio support as they will be included within the PDF at the end of each lesson, which can be increased in size within this format if or when required.
Course overview
You will learn about:
- The anatomy of the feet
- Why foot checks are important for patient’s who have Diabetes and why Diabetes makes them more at risk of having foot problems
- Consider what foot problems might occur
- Equipment that could be used during a Diabetic foot check appointment

- What advice you could give patients regarding signs and symptoms to watch out for in order to avoid foot problems
- We have added information in a PDF at the end of each lesson, for you to download. You can refer to this download when and/or if needed in future, to refresh your knowledge on what to do and how to do it within practice, being correct at the time of writing.
* Please remember to always adhere to your workplace Protocols. Assessment of competences should take place in line with local practice and in according to the RCNi guidelines, or any other that may have superseded these at the time of taking the course. *
We have provided the original resource information that we have explored, you may wish to read the original works and learn more from these at a later date or discover any new information that may be available since this course was created.
