Regular diabetic foot checks play an important role in identifying problems before they develop into serious complications. Neuropathy, reduced circulation and impaired healing can mean that seemingly minor changes to the feet go unnoticed, increasing the risk of ulceration, infection and potentially amputation.
This CPD-accredited diabetic foot checks in general practice course provides practical online training for healthcare professionals involved in diabetic foot screening and assessment in primary care. It explores what to look and test for during a foot check, how to recognise common diabetic foot problems, assess the patient’s level of risk, record findings and understand when further assessment or referral may be required. Guidance on recording diabetic foot checks using SystmOne is also included for learners working with the system.
Why this course matters
- Diabetes can reduce sensation, meaning that injuries, pressure damage and ulcers may develop without the patient noticing
- Poor circulation can delay healing and increase the risk of infection and tissue damage
- Regular diabetic foot assessment can help identify changes before they progress into more serious complications
- Recognising neuropathy, ischaemia, ulceration and other warning signs supports appropriate risk assessment and referral
- Accurate documentation is an important part of continuity of care and ongoing diabetes management
- Clear patient education can help people with diabetes recognise problems and seek support sooner
What you will learn
- Why diabetes increases the risk of foot problems and the role of neuropathy and impaired circulation
- How to recognise common diabetic foot problems and important warning signs
- Understand the equipment and assessment techniques used during diabetic foot screening
- How to carry out a structured diabetic foot check, including sensory and circulation assessment
- How to assess risk, recognise when referral or urgent action may be required and provide appropriate patient advice
- How to record findings clearly, with additional guidance for clinicians using SystmOne
Who this course is for
This online diabetic foot assessment training is designed for healthcare professionals working in general practice who carry out diabetic foot checks, including:
- Practice nurses involved in diabetes monitoring and long-term condition management
- Nursing associates supporting diabetic foot screening and patient reviews
- GP assistants and clinical support staff whose role includes carrying out structured foot assessments
- Trainee or newly appointed primary care clinicians developing their knowledge of diabetic foot assessment
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain why people with diabetes are at increased risk of foot complications
- Recognise features associated with neuropathy, impaired circulation and common diabetic foot conditions
- Describe the equipment and techniques used to assess sensation and circulation
- Conduct a structured diabetic foot assessment and identify relevant clinical findings
- Determine an appropriate risk category and recognise findings requiring referral or escalation
- Document findings and provide patients with appropriate foot care and safety netting advice
Full course description
Understanding diabetic foot risk
The course begins by exploring why the feet are particularly vulnerable to complications in people with diabetes. Learners develop an understanding of peripheral and autonomic neuropathy, impaired circulation and the processes that can make injuries harder to detect and slower to heal.
Basic foot anatomy and the mechanisms behind diabetic foot pain are also covered, providing clinical context for the assessment process that follows.
Recognising diabetic foot problems
Being able to recognise changes early is an important part of diabetic foot screening. The course uses clinical information and visual examples to explore a range of problems that may be encountered during assessment. These include callus formation, nail problems, toe deformities, diabetic foot ulcers and infection, alongside more serious complications such as ischaemia and Charcot neuroarthropathy. The relationship between neuropathy, abnormal pressure, poor circulation, tissue breakdown and ulceration is considered throughout.
Equipment and clinical assessment
Learners are introduced to equipment that may be used when assessing a patient’s feet, including a 10g monofilament, Neuropen, tuning fork and Doppler ultrasound. The course explains how sensory and circulation assessments contribute to identifying neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease, and how findings can help establish whether a patient may be at greater risk of ulceration or other diabetic foot complications.
Carrying out a diabetic foot check
A structured approach helps clinicians carry out diabetic foot assessments consistently and ensures important findings are not overlooked. The course brings the different elements together through a practical screening framework covering inspection, sensation, circulation, risk assessment and planning.
Attention is also given to relevant patient history, foot and skin changes, pulses, sensory testing and other findings that can influence the patient’s overall diabetic foot risk.
Risk assessment, referral and documentation
Clinical findings need to lead to an appropriate plan. Learners explore diabetic foot risk categorisation, the importance of recognising red flags and when findings may require routine, prompt or urgent onward referral.
Clear documentation is covered alongside the clinical assessment, including recording sensory testing, pulses, skin condition, deformity, risk status, advice, referrals and follow-up. For clinicians using SystmOne, the course includes additional guidance on recording diabetic foot assessment findings within the patient record.
Supporting patients to protect their feet
Diabetic foot care continues beyond the annual assessment. The course explores the advice patients can be given to support daily foot care, including regular self-inspection, skin and nail care, suitable footwear and recognising changes that require medical attention.
Safety-netting is also considered, helping learners explain when problems such as broken skin, increasing redness or swelling, discolouration or sudden changes should be reported promptly.
Assessment and certification
At the end of the course, you will complete an assessment to demonstrate your understanding of the topics covered. You will need to achieve a result of 80% or higher to pass.
On successful completion, you will receive a free CPD-accredited certificate, which can be downloaded or printed as evidence of your professional development.
Professional responsibility and scope
- This course provides knowledge and guidance to support diabetic foot checks but does not, by itself, confirm clinical competence.
- Competency should be assessed within your workplace before carrying out diabetic foot assessments independently
- Practice should align with local protocols, current guidance, and professional standards
- You are responsible for applying learning appropriately within your role
- Clinical concerns and abnormal findings should be escalated appropriately
Average time to complete
Approximately 3 hours, depending on your prior knowledge and experience. The course is fully self-paced, allowing you to complete it in stages. You can revisit any sections that you’re unsure of.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Can I buy this course for someone else?
Yes. To do this, register using their email address and the name they would like to appear on their certificate.
For example, you might know them as Kate, but they may need their certificate issued in their full birth name, Katherine. It’s best to check these details with them first.
Once the purchase is complete, they will receive the automatic course link by email.
Can I complete the course in my own time, and how long do I have to access it?
All of our online courses are self-paced, so you can complete them at a time that suits you. Your progress is saved at the end of each lesson, allowing you to return and continue later.
You will have six months from the date of enrolment to complete the course. After six months, the course will no longer be available.
Some courses, such as Basic Life Support, must be completed annually by clinical staff. A new course will therefore need to be purchased each year to ensure the training reflects the most up-to-date guidance.
Can I access the training material after completing the course?
Yes. The course materials are available to download during your access period, so you can keep a copy for future reference. Your course access will remain active for six months from the date of enrolment, after which the course will no longer be available.
