Understanding the purpose of 1:1 meetings

The course begins by exploring why regular 1:1 meetings are an essential part of effective people management. You’ll learn how structured conversations help managers build stronger working relationships while supporting individual performance and wellbeing.

Planning productive conversations

Preparation is key to successful 1:1 meetings. You’ll learn how to structure meetings, create agendas and encourage open, honest discussions that help employees feel listened to and supported.

Goal setting and employee development

You’ll learn how to use SMART objectives to support individual development, review progress and encourage continuous improvement while aligning personal goals with organisational priorities.

Managing difficult conversations

Not every one-to-one meeting is straightforward. This section explores how to manage difficult conversations professionally, apply the CEDAR model where appropriate and recognise when concerns should be escalated.

Following up and continuous improvement

Effective 1:1 meetings don’t end when the conversation finishes. You’ll learn how to document actions, monitor progress and use regular follow-up meetings to support ongoing development and performance.

At the end of the course, you will complete an assessment to demonstrate your understanding. You will need to achieve a result of 80% or higher to pass. On successful completion, you will receive a downloadable certificate.
