Full course description
Understanding and diagnosing asthma
The course introduces asthma symptoms, triggers and risk factors, alongside conditions that may present in a similar way. It provides an overview of the clinical history, examination and objective tests that may contribute to a diagnosis.
Asthma medicines and chronic management
You will explore common pharmacological terminology, medicine safety and the principles of managing chronic and poorly controlled asthma. The course includes AIR and MART regimes and reflects the move away from SABA-only treatment within current UK guidance.
Inhalers, spacers and patient support
The course introduces different inhaler and spacer devices and considers how technique, adherence and suitability can affect treatment. It also highlights resources that can support discussions with patients about using their inhalers correctly.
Conducting primary care asthma reviews
You will consider the purpose and frequency of asthma reviews and the information that may need to be assessed, including symptoms, treatment, exacerbations, inhaler technique and asthma control scores. Screenshot-based guidance illustrate how an asthma review may be recorded using SystmOne.
Asthma control and personalised care plans
The course explores how ongoing monitoring, appropriate follow-up and personalised asthma care plans can help patients understand and manage their condition. It also considers when treatment may need reviewing and when concerns should be referred to an appropriate clinician. Templates, prescribing systems and local asthma pathways may differ between organisations
Assessment and certification
At the end of the course, you will complete an assessment to demonstrate your understanding of the topics covered. You will need to achieve a result of 80% or higher to pass. On successful completion, you will receive a certificate that can be downloaded or printed for your records.
