The aim of this course is to provide a basic understanding of early years development. It is important for us to understand how our approach to early years children, can make a world of difference to every child. This course can help enable parents/carers/students and any educators to encourage the best outcomes for each and every child through light exploration of the Non-statutory curriculum guidance for the early years foundation stage (publishing.service.gov.uk) and some ideas around the way some children could learning and develop. For clinicians this information may be useful prior to needing to make a referral. There are also references to helpful materials for your exploration, this is correct at the time of producing this course therefore there may be further information that you may find more current at a later date. The duration of this course may vary depending on prior experience and knowledge.
This course will cover the basic complexities in early years learning and development to give a broad and relevant over-view, it is always helpful to also signpost parents/carers to their child’s Health Visitor (if under 5 years of age), school nurse or SENDCo as appropriate. Professionals in the Health and Education sector could also provide reports and/or support for both the parent/carer or indeed support if a referral is required.
Course overview:
- What are the early years?
By completing this lesson you will discover how important the early years are as a foundation for all future learning and development experiences, with some statistics of educational services from previous years, using information provided through UK Government. You will also be able to consider gentle behaviour techniques, which will be touched upon here.
- Some complexities of learning.
On completing this lesson you will gain a basic understanding of how children could learn from our responses and how they can be repetitive, which could be essential to their learning. You will begin to understand what schematic behaviours are, as this is touched upon in this lesson. There is information on what guidance/advice/support might be available, where it is a possibility that a child may require further assistance.
- Physical development.
You will be able to explore what desirable and undesirable behaviours could be and possibly drive us both as children and adults, which is demonstrated through an example.
You will be able to consider how diarising physical behaviour observations can be useful, when trying to understand children’s physical behaviours on completion of this lesson.
- Communication.
Through completion of this lesson you will investigate communication, how some communications are non-verbal (this will touch on tantrums and also hormones specifically for boys), also the expectations for speech patterns, who can best help and also some guidance to read for consideration.
- Emotional and cognitive function.
You will begin to understand the emotional and cognitive functions of early years children and what they may require from the adult in order to feel accepted and loved, no matter what might be happening around them, again more supportive help advice is provided here.
- End of course quiz
This is where you will be able to show off all the information that you have learnt, there is quite a lot, so making notes would benefit you for a quick recap! You will need a pass rate of 80% or more to be able to obtain your certificate, which can be downloaded and printed.
