Welcome to the GP Healthcare Alliance’s Interpreting blood results, a basic guide in Primary Care course.

This course is designed for clinical staff members who will be working within General Practice, who will need to request blood tests and interpret blood results, working within the UK. This could take up to 5 hours to complete for a novice, based on your prior knowledge and experience it may take you less and is a basic course for Primary Care clinicians. The aim of this training is for the learner to be able to understand and successfully interpret the most common blood tests found in General Practice. The course will provide information regarding why you would request a certain blood test, assisting with gaining confidence in knowing what blood tests to request and reading and interpreting blood test results. You will always adhere to your workplace protocols; gain an understanding of what you will need to do and why, maintaining professional practices throughout. All guidelines provided in the lessons within this course are correct and current at the time of writing and specific to our local laboratory guidelines. You will need to ensure that you follow any updated guidelines and work protocols within your practice and area.

Taking approximately 5 hours to complete (depending on experience), this CPD-accredited training provides a practical, structured approach to understanding blood test results and applying them safely in a primary care setting.

Scenarios are used as a learning and knowledge check and do not form part of the final assessment.

Reference ranges and local practice

The course provides guidance based on current local laboratory guidelines at the time of writing.

However:

  • Reference ranges may vary between laboratories
  • You should always apply your knowledge using local reference ranges and protocols
  • Practice should align with current guidelines, local procedures, and regulatory standards

Assessment and certification

At the end of the course, you will complete an assessment to demonstrate your understanding. You will need to achieve a result of 80% or higher to pass. On successful completion, you will receive a downloadable certificate.

Once the purchase is complete, they will receive the automatic course link by email.

All of our online courses are self-paced, so you can complete them at a time that suits you. Your progress is saved at the end of each lesson, allowing you to return and continue later.

You will have six months from the date of enrolment to complete the course. After six months, the course will no longer be available.

Some courses, such as Basic Life Support, must be completed annually by clinical staff. A new course will therefore need to be purchased each year to ensure the training reflects the most up-to-date guidance.

Yes. The course materials are available to download during your access period, so you can keep a copy for future reference. Your course access will remain active for six months from the date of enrolment, after which the course will no longer be available.
