An annual appraisal should be far more than a box-ticking exercise. Done well, appraisal meetings recognise achievements, identify development opportunities, strengthen working relationships and give employees clear direction for the year ahead. Done poorly, they can feel uncomfortable, inconsistent and offer little value to either the employee or the organisation.
This CPD-accredited online annual appraisal training course gives managers the practical skills and confidence to plan, deliver and follow up effective appraisal meetings. You’ll learn how to prepare properly, provide balanced feedback, set meaningful SMART objectives and handle more challenging conversations professionally, helping appraisal meetings become positive, productive discussions rather than difficult formalities.

Full course description
Why annual appraisals matter
Annual appraisals are more than a formal review of performance. They provide an opportunity to celebrate achievements, discuss challenges, explore career aspirations and agree practical steps for future development. The course begins by exploring why annual appraisal meetings are such an important part of effective people management.
Preparing for successful appraisal meetings
The quality of an appraisal often depends on the preparation that takes place beforehand. You’ll learn how to gather relevant information, review previous objectives, structure the meeting and create an environment where employees feel comfortable contributing to the discussion.
Delivering balanced and constructive feedback
Providing honest feedback can be one of the most challenging aspects of management. This section explores practical techniques for recognising achievements, discussing areas for improvement and delivering constructive feedback that motivates rather than discourages employees.
Setting meaningful objectives
An effective appraisal should result in a clear plan for the future. You’ll learn how to use SMART objectives to create realistic, measurable goals that support employee development while contributing to wider organisational priorities.
Managing difficult conversations
The course explores techniques for managing sensitive discussions professionally, addressing concerns with confidence and maintaining positive working relationships, even when conversations become challenging.
Recording outcomes and following up
The most effective appraisal meetings lead to action. You’ll learn how to document key discussions, agree practical action plans and follow up on progress to ensure appraisals become an ongoing part of employee development rather than a once-a-year exercise.
Assessment and certification
At the end of the course, you will complete an assessment to demonstrate your understanding. You will need to achieve a result of 80% or higher to pass. On successful completion, you will receive a downloadable certificate.
Professional responsibility and scope
This course is designed to support knowledge and understanding but does not in itself confirm competence.
- Competency should be assessed within your workplace
- Practice should align with local protocols, current guidance, and professional standards
- You are responsible for applying learning appropriately within your role
Average time to complete
Approximately 3 hours, depending on your prior knowledge and experience. The course is fully self-paced, allowing you to complete it in stages. You can revisit any sections that you’re unsure of.
